Leyland Cypress Trees Do you have noisy neighbors and would love to have a plant that helps block out the noise? Fences don’t work and hedges can get big and bulky so what other choices are there? How about the Leyland Cypress? They have long been known for their fast growing nature at a rate of 3 to 4 feet per year as well as being able to block the wind. Many people use the Leyland Cypress to line a property line and trim them as a hedge of a desired height while some leave them and let them grow to a potential height of 35 to 50 feet. The Leyland Cypress grows well in zones 6-10, making it a great plant in the lower two-thirds of the United States. The Leyland Cypress can be found at many local garden centers or tree nurseries and even online at www.tnnursery.net which right now has them marked as a special so you can take advantage of a great affordable low price on them and start making your landscape look beautiful. But is there a certain way to plant them and how do you plant them correctly? By following these few simple planting techniques you can’t go wrong. First you need to choose a location, make sure that you realize how they grow. The Leyland Cypress grows tall and slim and looks great planted in a straight line such as on a property line. If you are planting on a property line make sure you know where the line is, the last thing you want to do is spend hours planting your trees and it turn out growing over on your neighbors land. The ideal time to plant your Leyland Cypress is approximately 6 weeks before the first frost of the year, early spring is a viable alternative. The next step is to get all your supplies together such as post hole diggers or a shovel for easy digging. Dig the hole two x the width and depth of your Leyland Cypress root system. This will allow for the cypress to become well established without having to push through the surrounding packed soil. Once you have the hole dug you can spread the roots gently and place the tree into the hole, which now you can cover with soil and press the soil firmly around the freshly dug area. Now that you have your Leyland Cypress placed into the ground and packed down you can water it and then follow the same pattern or routine for one week intervals during the first growing season. Place a 3-4 inch layer of mulch in a 3 foot circle around the tree and take away any grass or weeds as soon as you see them to prevent from spreading. Give it time, give them some TLC and in no time you will have a nice uniform row of Leyland Cypress trees growing in your yard or along your property line. Wow! Windbreaker and noise breaker all in one, how can you beat it?
