Float glass, also known as window glass is a type of glass which is very flat and clear. The name Float was given to it on the basis of the method used to produce it. In the late 1950s, Sir Alastair Pilkington first introduced this method of producing float glass. This is method is now used to produce around 90% of total float glasses.
Drawing pictures on this type of glass is a manual process and it requires lots of patience to make the paints. The whole process involves numbers of steps and it needs to be carried out for a long time. Due to all the patience, dedication and time consumed, making such a colored glass is not very much popular today, however there are a lot of great possibilities for these paintings to get popularity.
The whole process of making paints on float glasses start with the production of the glass itself. The basic materials required to produce the glass are silica sand, calcium oxide, magnesium and soda. All these materials are first weighted properly and a proper mixture of them is introduced into a furnace, where they are melted by heating it to a temperature of 1500 degree centigrade.
The molten glass then poured into a bath of molten tin. The glass, being a viscous material and the tin which is very fluid, doesn’t mix with each other and the contact surface between these two becomes very flat. The glass gets cooled easily on the surface of tin.
The process of doing paints starts with doing the outline with a black paint. Once the color gets dried, the excess paint used for the outline is removed from it. Then glass is then fired in an oven and shaded with a special matte paint. The next step is to give it the first color with a stain and then fired again. After that, a layer of enamel is coated on it. The glass needs to be fired after applying every coat of enamel onto it; otherwise the colors will get mixed with each other.
The colored glass is generally used for decoration purpose. It give a very decent look to your window panes, wall decoration etc.
