We live in an age of wonder that is partly powered by the Internet. It is now possible to explore new worlds with the click of mouse and we can do research in minutes that in days gone by would have taken weeks. All technology brings progress and new opportunities, but along with it comes potential peril. This same principle applies to the Internet. It is a source of knowledge and instant communication, but it has to be used properly in order protect our children. Here are some thoughts for you and your family to consider. The Internet can be a great resource for homework, learning, research, and fun activities. But it can also be easy for kids to get sidetracked by playing many games or watching videos online. This may not even be the biggest concern for parents. In the virtual world of the Internet, so often there is no accountability for what is found online. The Internet has provided unlimited opportunities for child predators to stalk children and young adults alike. These individuals are extremely adept at disguising their true identities and will attempt to engage children in public or private chat rooms in order to target them for deviant purposes. Because of their skill, a child will not know that they are talking to an adult. It can be tricky to protect kids from all the undesirable sites on the Internet as well. Some of these sites can look pretty innocent until the page is opened & then it is too late. An impressionable child can easily be taken in, much to the parents dismay! Talk to your child about the potential on-line danger. You talk to them about safety belts in cars, and the dangers of talking to strangers. This is equally as important. Talk to them about it. Now for the good news, there are some very effective ways to guarantee your childrens' safety while still allowing them to enjoy their online experience. Using software programs designed to give the parents control of the content viewed on computers will give parents the peace of mind that their kids are being well protected. You can find more information about this here: www.lonestargroups.com Parents should have passwords to the computer and to the Internet account. The parent should sign the child on and off of the account. Remember you are the parent and you are in charge. Take the time to find out about computer safe guards at the library and at your childs' school. Remember, kids can have access to computers everywhere now. Also, talk to the parents of your childrens' friends about internet safety. This is everyone’s problem, and by working together we have a much better chance to prevent some major problems.
