Many thousands of people are injured yearly - some very seriously - when they slip or trip up and fall on a rough patch of ground, a dangerous floor or a flight of stairs. Since property owners have responsibility for maintaining safe premises and warning visitors of possible hazards, they can be held liable for injuries that occur due to injury-causing conditions on their property. Slip-and-fall accidents can cause all types of injuries, ranging from the relatively mild to life-threatening. A slip-and-fall accident can occur nearly anywhere, on private or public property, inside or outside. A slip-and-fall injury can occur due to hazards such as: potholes, badly lit or unmarked stairs or pathways, slippery tiling, unbalanced flooring, rippled carpet or foreign matters on the floor or walkway, adverse weather conditions (for instance, ice, snow, or rain), uneven sidewalks Slip-and-fall injuries range in severity. A victim may sustain bruises, broken bones, and scrapes which require minimum medical aid and heal relatively fast. Others may suffer a catastrophic personal injury – a brain injury, vertebral injury, or burn injury – that causes lifelong damage and needs lasting medical treatment. In the worst case scenario, an injured person dies due to his or her injuries. If this happens, and the slip-and-fall accident occurred because of the property owner's negligence, then the death is believed to be a wrongful death. The sooner you lodge a suit after the injury, the better. Most slip-and-fall injury suits are lodged within thirty days of the injury. The reason for this is that if you wait too long, it may look like you are trying to file a frivolous lawsuit instead of a legitimate one. If your case has even a hint of frivolity to it, your lawsuit is likely to be dismissed. After a slip-and-fall accident you should first consult your doctor to see the extent of your injuries. This will prove that you did indeed suffer a slip-and-fall injury, and can be valuable in your case. You must keep thorough records, not only of the medical injury records, but also of any work you missed and the amount of money it cost you. Any extra costs, such as trabsportation, medicines, physical therapy, and the like should also be thoroughly recorded. There expenses can be paid back, if you win the lawsuit.
