Borosilicate glass is used in making certain optical instruments like lenses due to its thermal shock resistance. It is also used for making glass items in the laboratory that require strength and high thermal resistance. Under normal conditions, this glass can withstand temperatures of about 230-240 degrees Centigrade. It can also survive temperatures of around 400 degrees Centigrade for a short period. The absolute maximum temperature is 450 degrees Centigrade. This glass is also resistant to corrosion due to chemicals. That is why it is considered to be perfect for use in the laboratory. Borosilicate glass was initially used for making kitchenware, railroad lanterns and thermometer glass. Since it is very expensive to manufacture this glass, only a few companies are engaged in manufacturing the borosilicate colored glass for the glass art market.
