The art of fusing Glass to Ceramics is a very old practice. Due to various reasons, it is again coming back into the market. The process is actually adding a layer of glass onto the surface of a ceramic vessel. The outcome of this process is a beautiful artistic creature, which have a great demand in the present market.
The process of fusing glass into ceramics requires a ceramic kiln, which upon heated and cooled following a procedure can give you the desired output. The art of glass manufacturing is many hundred years old. Now, the technology used to fuse the glass is much more advanced than the old ones, however the basics are all the same.
The heating process of the glass requires a ceramic kiln; however a glass kiln is more preferable for its insulated quality. Slow cooling is very much necessary for a perfect fusion, which can be better achieved with a glass kiln. The best one in this regard is a ceramic one which is already fired and coated with glaze.
A flat surface like a plate, tile or dish etc. is much easier for the fusion glass manufacturing. In case of a vertical surface, glue is required to be added while heating the glass. Any ordinary glue can’t do the desired job; bisque repair glue is the one which can hold the grip upon heating.
To fuse the glass, you can take more than one pieces of different types and colored glass, it will add more color variance and blend to the output product. While heating the glass, care should be taken so that it gets heated slowly.
The next one is the cooling process. The cooling should also be done slowly and steadily. The kiln should not be turned off at once. Cooling abruptly can create cracks on the output. If the kiln is a manual one then turn off the switch one at a time, or if it is a computerized one then the programming should be set accordingly.
The fusion of glass to ceramics, though not a tough task, however care should be taken while doing this. A welding rated glass should always be worn while carrying on the operation.
