B-Roll – Adds Visual Value B-roll is a very valuable but low cost tool in helping increase the visual quality of a video production. The Problem – Talking Heads Video On a recent production for a series of wellness videos, our client made clear they did not simply want a lot of talking heads video. Talking heads video is a video that consists primarily or entirely of shots of people talking. The problem with talking head video is that it doesn’t take advantage of the power of video. Video is a visual medium, and as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousands words. Images Convey Emotions Thus, it’s important to in video to choose images that will convey the message of your video. Usually the message should have an underlying emotional tone: happiness, sadness, excitement, fear, etc. A carefully chosen video image will quickly convey that emotional message, and thus make your video more effective. Sometimes a video producer – or a company producing its own video – will simply string together shots of talking heads. It saves time and production work, but ultimately it’s a cop out. How to Gather B Roll So on the production of wellness videos, we asked what images would help convey the message. On each day of the 4-day shoot, we interviewed about 5 people. In each case, we asked them to bring props, etc., as you’ll see in the video on our website. So whereas a typical, corner-cutting production might show an interviewee talking about wellness, or specifically running or swimming. Instead, we actually showed the person running or swimming. What types of b-roll are there? A useful exercise is to pretend you have to make your whole video, without the use of any dialog or words – only images. So ask yourself, what images would support our message? Sources of B Roll Footage Sources of b-roll include shooting your own footage. This is relatively easy, and goes quickly since there’s no need to record sound. Alternatively, you can use stock footage, which is video that already exists, and available to put in your production. Istockphoto is a good source of high-quality, fee-based stock footage. Creative commons has stock footage that can be used for free. So again to summarize, video is a visual medium. In order for video to work as well as possible for you, you must make your video visual. So think in pictures, not in words. Many videos – such as interviews or testimonials – call for the use of interview dialogue, but still it’s possible to put pictures over the interview that better tell the story.
